Metabolic Collapse: What's Really Happening to Your Metabolism After 40

In our culture most people have been led to believe that midlife metabolic decline is just aging. The science tells a different story.

The most common manifestations of this decline are:

  • ·Weight gain that seems to happen faster than ever before
  • ·Stubborn belly fat that won't budge no matter what you try
  • ·Doing the same diet or exercise that used to work… but now it doesn't
  • ·Feeling like your metabolism has slowed to a crawl
  • ·Low daily energy, especially in the afternoon
  • ·Waking up feeling tired even after a full night of sleep
  • ·Brain fog or trouble concentrating
  • ·Cravings for sugar or carbs, especially in the evening
  • ·Feeling hungry again shortly after eating
  • ·Loss of muscle tone or feeling "softer" than you used to
  • ·Longer recovery from workouts
  • ·Feeling like your body is aging faster than it should
  • ·Clothes fitting tighter around the midsection
  • ·Hormonal shifts that make weight loss harder
  • ·Feeling like you have to work twice as hard for half the results
  • ·Frustration that nothing seems to work anymore
  • ·The sense that your body is working against you instead of with you

This cluster of experiences usually signals that the person believes:

"My metabolism is broken or slowing down with age."

But what I've discovered — working on my own metabolism and working with clients — is that something very different is happening. This is not healthy aging. The science points to a progressive decline in key hormones over the last 40 to 50 years.

Men today, on average, have significantly lower testosterone levels than their fathers did at the same age (Travison et al., 2007). This is not aging. This is not genetics. This is not normal.

Metabolic Collapse

What we're seeing is what I call Metabolic Collapse.

It's a gradual breakdown in the biological signals that regulate metabolism, hormones, and inflammation.

The world we live in has changed dramatically over our lifetimes. More accurately: we have changed the world we live in, drastically.

We have removed, reduced, or altered the most fundamental signals our bodies require to function and to express health.

The biggest change has been light. Just a little more than 100 years ago, the only light humans were exposed to came from the sun or from fire. In the early 1900s the electric grid went live, and we have progressively replaced the sun with artificial light.

My work is based on one simple truth:

The human body is engineered to express robust health when the conditions are right.

It's clear when you look at population health trends that something is disrupting our ability to express health. One need only look at the rise of chronic diseases of modernity over the last 100 years to see that something is impacting human health — diseases like:

  • ·Cardiovascular disease
  • ·Neurodegenerative disease
  • ·Autoimmune disease
  • ·Chronic respiratory disease
  • ·Cancer

The Real Cause

Your metabolism evolved to run in response to very specific signals. Some of the most powerful are:

  • ·Morning sunlight
  • ·Darkness at night
  • ·Consistent sleep timing
  • ·Natural seasonal rhythms
  • ·Daily and seasonal food timing

The Circadian Mismatch Crisis

Modern life has not only altered every one of those signals — in many cases it has removed them from our daily lives almost entirely.

Humans evolved living in synchrony with the rhythms of the planet. We spent our days outdoors. We now live almost entirely indoors.

The consequences extend to every aspect of body function. The most obvious are:

  • ·Metabolic dysfunction
  • ·Inflammation
  • ·Hormonal disruption
  • ·Fatigue

Our bodies are hardwired to respond to daily signals that help coordinate tens of thousands of essential processes. When those signals are absent or misaligned, problems emerge.

The Cascade

When we lose the coordination and timing of those signals — or they disappear altogether — the body loses its metabolic rhythm.

We have replaced many of the natural signals with manmade signals that are both quite different from the signals from nature and mistimed.

As a result, our metabolism drifts:

  • ·Blood sugar regulation begins to deteriorate
  • ·Inflammation rises
  • ·Hormones begin to shift
  • ·Energy production declines

The body has a more and more difficult time staying coordinated. A host of symptoms like the ones above start to emerge. We slowly but surely begin to experience a decline in how we feel — and, importantly, in our ability to perform physically, cognitively, and emotionally.

But It's Not Normal Aging

Just because it's common.

Just because nothing seemed to have triggered it.

Just because the typical person your age is experiencing something similar.

That doesn't mean it's normal or inevitable.

This metabolic drift — caused by altered and eliminated signals — is why so many people in their 40s and 50s begin to experience some combination of:

  • ·Stubborn weight gain
  • ·Poor sleep
  • ·Fatigue
  • ·Brain fog
  • ·Declining hormones

This Is Not Destiny

Unfortunately, we have a medical healthcare system focused on managing symptoms rather than restoring function. It's the dark side of the reductionistic, mechanistic approach to human health — largely focused on the application of exogenous chemicals to coerce the body to respond according to the model.

The good news: metabolic decline is often reversible, and almost always improvable.

The problem isn't that the body is broken. The issue is that the signals the body has evolved over millennia to require — to regulate metabolism — have been lost.

You can't heal in the same environment in which you got sick.

The Metabolic Resilience Method™

This is why I developed the Metabolic Resilience Method™.

It was born out of necessity for myself. I had traveled the road of bio-identical hormone replacement, and after coming off it I realized that it wasn't solving the problem. It wasn't even addressing the problem. The focus was on the effect, not the cause.

(I share my full story and lab data on the About page.)

I dug deep into the science. I looked at the research. Over the course of more than a year — and continuing today — I shifted, implemented, removed, added, and altered many of the daily signals I expose my body to.

This is the Metabolic Resilience Method™.

It is a system designed to restore the biological signals that regulate metabolism, hormones, and inflammation.

The core pillars of the method are the R.E.S.E.T. framework:

R
Rhythm
E
Environment
S
Sleep
E
Energy
T
Timing

The Metabolic Resilience Score™

If you're experiencing symptoms of metabolic decline, the first step is understanding where your metabolic signaling has been disrupted.

That's why I created the Metabolic Resilience Score™ — a diagnostic tool that evaluates the five biological systems that regulate metabolism: Circadian Rhythm, Light Environment, Sleep Quality, Metabolic Flexibility, and Inflammation Signals.

It takes a few minutes. Your results are emailed instantly. There is nothing to buy.
